Is a Printed PAN Card Valid?

How an official PAN card, an e-PAN and a private PVC print differ, and what to show when a PAN is asked for.

How an official PAN card, an e-PAN and a private PVC print differ, and what to show when a PAN is asked for.

What is official

The official record is your PAN allotment with the Income Tax Department. The physical PAN card and the digitally signed e-PAN are both issued through the official process. A private PVC print is a copy of a file you hold.

What to show

Most checks need your PAN number and, sometimes, a copy of the document. Ask the organisation which forms it accepts. We cannot say a private print will be accepted, because that is decided by the organisation asking for it.

Questions to ask the organisation

Ask which forms of PAN it accepts: the physical card, the e-PAN, or just the number. Ask whether a printed copy needs to be self-attested. Their answer matters more than any printing service’s claim.

If the organisation will accept the e-PAN or the number, you may not need a printed copy at all.

Keeping your PAN safe

A PAN card shows your name, date of birth and number. Share copies only with organisations that need them, and write the purpose on the copy if you are asked to submit one.

If you still want a printed copy

A PVC print is a convenient, durable copy of a file you hold. Check the file first and read the file preparation guide, then choose the print.
