Vitthal Rukmini Photo Frames

Vitthal and Rukmini of Pandharpur, central to the Warkari tradition of Maharashtra. A frame for the home mandir, or a gift around Ashadhi Ekadashi.

Vitthal Rukmini photo frames

Vitthal, also called Vithoba or Panduranga, is the god of Pandharpur in Maharashtra and the centre of the Warkari tradition. In his temple he stands on a brick with his hands on his hips, beside Rukmini. These 11 frames show the pair in that form: a dark idol dressed in red, yellow and green silk, with heavy garlands of marigold and jasmine.

Designs

Some frames set them inside a carved golden arch with the temple tower behind. Others use a sunrise, a sunburst glow, or a starry violet sky. Marigold-covered versions recall the Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi wari, when thousands of Warkaris walk to Pandharpur. A lotus version stands them on pink lotuses with a row of lamps.

Families from Maharashtra often keep a Vitthal frame in the pooja room, and a frame is a thoughtful gift for someone who has just completed the wari.
