Gods with their own temples and traditions
Some deities are worshipped by millions but do not fit neatly under Shiva, Vishnu or Ganesha. This page has 84 frames of them, including Ayyappa Swamy, Khandoba, Surya Dev, Shani Dev, Brahma, Dhanvantari, Dattatreya, Kubera, Chitragupta, the Navagraha, Kaal Bhairav, Batuk Bhairav and Ramdev Pir.
Recognising the forms
Ayyappa sits in a yoga pose wrapped in flower garlands, often with the Sabarimala hills and the Makara Jyothi star behind him. Khandoba rides a white horse with a spear, sometimes with his consort Banai and a path of yellow turmeric leading to Jejuri. Surya Dev drives a chariot pulled by seven white horses, which is also the popular picture for Chhath. Shani Dev is shown in dark blue with a crow at his feet, and families who keep a Saturday observance often choose him. Dattatreya has three faces and six arms and stands with a cow and four dogs. Dhanvantari holds a pot of amrita and healing herbs, which is why doctors and Ayurveda clinics like him, and he is also a common Dhanteras picture. Kubera sits with pots of coins, and Chitragupta, the record keeper, is traditionally worshipped on Bhai Dooj.
