The size of a PVC ID card

An ID card follows the ID-1 size, 85.6 by 54 mm, the same as a bank card. It fits standard card holders, lanyard pouches and card readers made for that size. At 300 dots per inch the card is about 1,011 by 638 pixels, which is the size to design at.

Laying out an ID card

A simple layout works best, because people read an ID card in a second.

• Top: the organisation's name and logo.
• Left or centre: a clear photo of the person.
• Beside the photo: the name in larger letters, then the role or class, then the ID number.
• Bottom or back: a contact number, a barcode or QR code, and a validity date if you use one.

Keep the colours calm. A dark text colour on a light background is easiest to read. A coloured band at the top is a good way to show a department or a year.

Photos on ID cards

A photo on an ID card is small, so it has to be clear. Use a front-facing picture with a plain background and even light. Crop it so the face fills most of the frame, and avoid hats or sunglasses. Use the original file from the camera. A photo sent through a chat app is compressed and looks soft when printed.

We check each file for orientation and cut-off edges. The cards are printed in a day, packed flat and sent to your address, arriving 5 to 8 days later. If a file cannot be opened or looks incomplete, we may contact you before printing.

Privacy for ID card files

An ID card carries a name, a photo and sometimes a phone number. Store the files on a safe device, share them only with the people who need them, and delete extra copies when the order is done. Print only what the card needs, and if you are printing for children, get permission from the school or the parents first.

What the card is not

These are printed cards. They have no chip, no magnetic stripe and no access control, so they do not open doors or log attendance on their own. If your barcode or QR code is read by a system you already use, test it from the file before you order.
