Photo Frame Size Guide: 8x12 vs 12x18 Inch

Which photo frame size to choose: 8x12 inch or 12x18 inch? Where each fits, how many photos a collage needs, and how to hang them.

Every photo frame we make comes in two sizes: 8 × 12 inch and 12 × 18 inch. Both have a 2:3 shape, the same shape as a photo taken on most phones and cameras, so your pictures fit without awkward cropping. The question is which size suits the place and the photos you have in mind.

The two sizes at a glance

  • 8 × 12 inch is about 20 × 30 cm. It sits on a desk, shelf, bedside table or pooja shelf, or hangs as part of a group of frames.
  • 12 × 18 inch is about 30 × 45 cm, which is roughly 2.25 times the area. It works as the main picture on a wall, above a sofa, a bed or a console.

Both come with a black or white frame, printed in UV-cured ink on an MDF frame and ready to hang.

Choosing by room and use

For a desk or shelf, the 8 × 12 inch size is the natural choice. It is large enough to read from a metre or two away and small enough not to dominate the space. For a wall that people see from across the room, such as above a sofa, in a hallway or on a bedroom wall, 12 × 18 inch has more presence and looks deliberate rather than lost.

If you are filling a gallery wall, mixing sizes looks better than using one size: a larger frame as the anchor with smaller ones around it. For devotional pictures, the right size depends on where it will sit; our guide on how to choose a God photo frame for your pooja room covers shelves and walls.

Choosing by number of photos

A single portrait looks good at either size. As you add photos, each one prints smaller, so the larger size helps. As a rough guide, 8 × 12 inch is comfortable for up to about six photos, and 12 × 18 inch gives layouts of ten or more pictures room to stay clear. See collage photo frames for layouts from 2 to 30 photos, or the 9 to 12 photo frames and 20 to 30 photo frames if you have many pictures.

Hanging tips

  • Hang a single frame with its centre at about eye level, which is commonly around 145 cm from the floor.
  • Leave about 5 to 8 cm between frames in a group so they read as a set.
  • Keep frames in a group in the same colour, black or white, for a tidier look.

Photo quality matters more at larger sizes

A bigger print shows more detail, and also shows flaws. Use the original photo file, not a screenshot or a picture forwarded through a chat app. Our note on why uploaded files print blurry lists what to check.
